A newborn calf has little fat reserve and quickly loses heat in a cold, draughty hutch. A calf jacket holds in that warmth during the weeks when the calf is still small. When a calf jacket makes sense
A jacket mainly helps newborn and weak calves, calves kept outdoors in a hutch or igloo, and on nights when it gets properly cold. A dry, well-bedded lying area and a draught-free spot remain the basis; a jacket is an addition to that, not a replacement.
Choosing size and version
The Calf Coat calf jackets come in 70 and 80 cm. Measure the calf before ordering and, if in doubt, choose the size it can still grow into over the coming weeks. The fastenings are available separately, so you can replace a broken fastening without buying a new jacket. The Bodyguard calf summer jacket is intended for warmer days.
What to watch for
Check every day that the jacket is dry and not rubbing at the withers or chest. A wet or dirty jacket can do more harm than good, so keep a spare jacket to hand if you cover several calves at once. Take the jacket off as soon as the calf no longer needs it, so it does not overheat.
