You keep cats, foxes or martens out of the garden by making the spot unattractive to them. Here you will find products that use sound, light, scent or a physical barrier for this: animal deterrents from Knock Pest, scent sets and sprays from Shield Up, Mustolet and Knock Pest, and a spike strip for fences.

What the deterrents do
The animal deterrent and the Solar version have a motion sensor: only when an animal comes within about 8 to 10 metres do they give a high-pitched sound signal, on the Solar together with a flash of light. Aim the device at the route the animal takes, such as a gap in the hedge. The Wild Solar charges during the day and switches on automatically in the evening. Scent products need to be repeated; Shield Up states about three months per filling, for Mustolet the frequency is on the label. Use biocides safely. Always read the label and product information before use.
Points to note
Your own dog, cat, rabbit or guinea pig can also hear the signal of an ultrasonic deterrent. So do not place the device near their hutch or usual resting spot. Animals can get used to a constant signal; move a deterrent now and then or combine two products. Also remove what attracts them, such as open rubbish bags or feed left outside. Rules for wild animals such as foxes, martens and game differ by country; check beforehand.
Specifically for martens there is deterring stone martens, for birds pigeon deterrents and for molehills mole control. Back to screening and proofing.
Frequently asked questions
How do I deter cats from my garden?
Place an animal deterrent with motion sensor near the spot where the cat comes in or relieves itself, and make the fence unattractive with a spike strip.
Does an animal deterrent need power?
The Solar versions charge with a solar panel. The standard animal deterrent runs on three AA batteries or a separate adapter.
Will my own dog hear the deterrent too?
Yes, dogs and cats hear ultrasonic sound. Place the device away from their usual spots.
Does a spike strip hurt the cat?
The strip makes the top edge uncomfortable to walk along. Fix it firmly and in a place where an animal cannot jump or fall onto it.
