A fly rug keeps flies, horseflies and midges off the body; a sweet itch rug also covers the neck, crest and tail head, the areas where a horse with sweet itch is most affected. Both rugs in this collection have a neck cover: the RugBe Zebra, which is intended as a fly and sweet itch rug, and the Horse Armor Knockdown, which according to the manufacturer has an insect-repellent agent worked into the fabric.
Zebra or Knockdown?
The Zebra Fly Rug is made of soft, fine-mesh polyester with a lined chest piece, a securable belly flap, leg straps and a large tail flap. It can be machine washed at 30 °C. The Horse Armor Knockdown is a polyester rug with a neck cover that has Insect Shield worked into it. Because the fabric contains an insect-repellent agent, follow the directions for use and washing on the label. Use biocides safely. Always read the label and product information before use.
Finding the size
Place your tape measure at the front of the chest and measure along the flank to behind the buttocks. The Zebra rug is based on these sizes:
| Size (chest to rump) | Back length (withers to rump) |
|---|---|
| 175 cm | 125 cm |
| 185 cm | 135 cm |
| 195 cm | 145 cm |
| 205 cm | 155 cm |
| 215 cm | 165 cm |
The Knockdown comes in 183 and 191 cm. If your horse is between two sizes, pay particular attention to the fit at the withers and shoulder: the rug must not rub there.
When do you use a sweet itch rug?
Culicoides, tiny biting midges, are active from spring to autumn, especially around sunrise and sunset. Many owners of a horse with sweet itch therefore put the rug on early in the season and leave it on until the midges have gone. If your horse is itchy or has broken skin, consult your vet about the approach.
Points to note
Check daily that the rug is not rubbing anywhere and that your horse is not getting too warm under it. A tear is a way in for insects; repair it quickly.
Complete the protection with a fly mask, fly spray and skin care. All rugs and headcollars are in headcollars, rugs and fly masks.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a fly rug and a sweet itch rug?
A sweet itch rug covers more: usually also the neck, crest, belly and tail head. The Zebra rug with neck cover and tail flap can be used for both.
Can a fly rug stay on in the rain?
A fine-mesh fly rug is not waterproof. After a heavy shower it is better to take it off and let it dry, and check that the skin underneath is not overheating.
From when do I put on a sweet itch rug?
Many owners start early in spring and continue until the midges disappear in autumn. Consult your vet about what suits your horse.
