Against horseflies and flies on your horse, a combination helps more than a single product: an insect repellent spray on the coat, a fly rug or headcollar with fly mask, and a horsefly trap in the field to reduce the number of horseflies nearby. Here you will find sprays from KerbEX and Zedan, the Loer horsefly trap, the Horse Armor Knockdown fly rug and headcollars with an integrated fly mask.

Choosing and applying a spray properly

KerbEX Rot comes in 1 and 5 litre bottles; with the matching sprayer, you refill from the large bottle. Zedan BremsenBremse is specifically aimed at horseflies. When choosing, look at how long a product works according to the label and whether it is suitable for sensitive skin. A few tips:

  • Spray onto a clean, dry coat and against the direction of the hair, so the product reaches the skin.
  • Never spray in the face; apply it around the eyes and ears with a cloth.
  • Reapply after rain, sweating or washing, according to the directions on the label.
  • If your horse has sensitive skin, spray a test patch on the neck a day beforehand.

Horseflies in the field

Horseflies are attracted to large, dark and warm shapes. The Loer horsefly trap is based on this: a black ball that warms up in the sun draws them under the canopy, and they end up in a collection container via a funnel. Parts such as the ball, canopy, funnel, hanging ring and collection container are available separately if something breaks. Place the trap according to the instructions, in a sunny spot.

Shielding

A fly rug keeps insects off the body and neck; the Horse Armor Knockdown comes in sizes 183 and 191 cm. Protect the head with a headcollar with integrated fly mask in Pony, Cob and Full. The Tickless Horse is a small device that, according to the manufacturer, keeps ticks away with ultrasound.

Points to note

Always use insect repellents according to the label. If your horse reacts strongly to bites, with lumps or itching that does not go away, consult your vet and read about itching and sweet itch.

More protection is in flies, horseflies and ticks, other traps in horsefly traps and fly traps for stable and yard, and masks and rugs in headcollars, rugs and fly masks.

Frequently asked questions

How often do I need to reapply fly spray?
That is stated on the label and depends on the product. After rain, sweating or washing, a new layer is usually needed.

Does a horsefly trap help if I also use spray?
Yes, they complement each other: the spray protects your horse, the trap reduces the number of horseflies in the area.

Can fly spray go on my horse's head?
Do not spray it directly. Apply it with a cloth around the eyes and ears, or use a headcollar with fly mask.
