  • Direct Calcium 12 x 94 g

    Direct Bolus Direct Calcium 12 x 94 g

    Out of stock

Direct Calcium BolusDietetic feed for dairy cows in bolus form to supplement calcium in the period around calving, to reduce the risk of milk fever and subclinical hypocalcaemia.Contains a combination of 2 readily available forms of calcium, calcium formate and calcium acetate, and provides 25 grams of available calcium per bolus. Why a calcium bolusShortly before or after calving, a dairy cow can develop a shortage of calcium reserves in the blood, because the calcium requirement rises sharply around calving. If the cow cannot replenish these reserves quickly enough, the blood calcium level can drop too low, resulting in visible milk fever symptoms such as reduced appetite and activity, cold ears and poorly functioning skeletal and organ muscles. In a larger group (40-50%), however, no symptoms are immediately visible, but the low calcium level can still have consequences later in lactation. The Direct Calcium Bolus is an easy-to-administer gelatine capsule that dissolves quickly in the rumen, so that its contents of calcium formate and calcium acetate are also released quickly. Thanks to the good availability of both forms of calcium, the calcium quickly becomes available to the cow. This ensures a gradual rise in the calcium level, which is maintained over a longer period. The perfect choice for every dairy farmer to supplement calcium in dairy cows, for an optimal start to lactation!Feeding advice1 bolus 12-24 hours before calving.1 bolus immediately after calving.1 bolus 10-12 hours after calving.1 bolus 24 hours after calving.Supportive after milk fever therapy1 bolus 2 hours after an intravenous calcium treatment.1 bolus 12 hours after an intravenous calcium treatment.Administer orally using a suitable applicator. The bolus can be administered using the white rings in the bolus applicator (36 mm). Good to know: This Direct Calcium Bolus is the successor to the Excellent Calcium Bolus Gold (CALC05018 and CALC05019).

    Out of stock

The practical 4-litre aluminium bags are easy to fill and suitable for pasteurisation (optional), freezing and reheating later. To feed the colostrum, simply screw the matching teat or tube onto the bag. This way you quickly and efficiently give your calves a good start. Additional information: Feeding calves in their first days of life, and even directly after birth, is crucial for their health and further development. The first milk – better known as colostrum or beestings – contains a considerably higher concentration of immunoglobulins and nutrients than ordinary cow’s milk. It is important that the newborn calf immediately takes in a generous amount of this high-quality colostrum. This can be colostrum from your own cows or a ready-made solution such as Excellent Colostrum (IBR-free) for calves. We recommend always keeping a stock of frozen colostrum. That way, high-quality first milk is available at any time. If the colostrum quality after calving turns out to be insufficient (for example in heifers) or too little is produced, you can fall back on this frozen stock.

A calving cow will not wait while you hunt for everything. So set out your calving kit well before the due date, in a fixed spot by the calving pen. This collection contains what you use during and straight after the birth: calving equipment, hygiene products and complementary feeds for the fresh cow.

The calving kit: what goes in it

  • Calving ropes from Vink, in nylon or Multilon (blue/red), so you can keep the left and right leg apart.
  • Lubricant from Excellent, in a tub or a 500 ml standing/hanging tube.
  • Shoulder-length gloves for single use, so you can check hygienically how the calf is lying.
  • A calf puller from Vink, in 180 or 200 cm, also as a leg-by-leg version.
  • A lifting device such as the cow lifter or Vink Koelift, for a cow that does not get up after calving (found under barn supplies).

Calf puller or just ropes?

With two ropes and a helper, you can often manage a normal birth. A calf puller gives extra, even pulling force and is especially useful if you often calve cows on your own. With a leg-by-leg model, you pull on each leg in turn, so you can follow the cow's movements. Only pull along with the contractions, and call the vet if the calf is badly presented or there is no progress after a reasonable time.

Supporting the fresh cow

After calving, the cow needs plenty of energy and fluid. Excellent calving drink and the Cow Drench variants E, L and R are complementary feeds that you dissolve in water or drench. Propylene glycol (Prop Top) is a liquid energy source. Rumivet has a combination set with energy and calcium boluses for around calving. With KRUUSE ketosis test strips for milk or urine, you check in the following days whether the cow is getting enough energy. Veterinary medicines for milk fever or uterine problems are a matter for the vet.

Looking for a calving rope or calving drink straight away? See calving aids and calving drinks. Giving drinks is done with equipment from drenching and boluses; for receiving the calf, use the supplies in calf rearing. Everything for cattle is in the cattle section.

Frequently asked questions

What length of calf puller do I need?
The Vink calf pullers come in 180 and 200 cm. Choose a length that suits the space behind the cow in your calving pen.

Is calving drink a medicine?
No, it is a complementary feed that provides energy, minerals and fluid. If a cow is ill or does not get up, call the vet.

Why two colours of calving rope?
With a blue and a red rope, you keep the calf's left and right leg apart, even when things get hectic.
