Origin & history
The Hamiltonstövare is an elegant hunting dog breed from Sweden, named after its founder Count Adolf Patrick Hamilton, who founded the Swedish Kennel Club in the late 19th century.
Hamilton wanted to breed a dog suited to the rugged Scandinavian terrain—courageous, tenacious, and with an excellent sense of smell, but also obedient and controlled. He crossed local Swedish hounds with Foxhounds, Harriers, and Beagles, resulting in a breed that combined both endurance and intelligence.
The Hamiltonstövare quickly became popular as a fox and hare hunting dog, and remains a popular working and companion animal in Scandinavia today.
