Origin & history

The Drenthe Partridge Dog is a proud Dutch breed originating in the province of Drenthe. It descends from the so-called "Spioen," a hunting dog brought to the Netherlands from France and Spain in the 16th and 17th centuries. In Drenthe, this type of dog was further developed into a versatile hunting and family dog.

The Drent was used by farmers and hunters who wanted one dog for everything: hunting, retrieving, alerting, and companionship. Thanks to its reliable nature and versatility, it quickly became an indispensable companion in the countryside.

In 1943, the breed was officially recognized in the Netherlands. Today, the Drentse Partridge Dog remains popular as a hunting dog and as a loyal family pet.

Appearance & body shape

The Drentse Partridge Dog is a medium-sized, elegant yet muscular dog with a balanced build. Its coat is medium-length, dense, and slightly wavy, with abundant feathering on the ears, chest, legs, and tail.

The base color is white with brown patches and mold patterns, sometimes with speckles. Its eyes are amber and radiate gentleness and intelligence. The tail is long and carried gaily while moving.

Format

  • Males: 58–63 cm height at the withers

  • Bitches: 55–60 cm height at the withers

  • Weight: 25–35 kg

Character & temperament

The Drentse Partridge Dog is friendly, intelligent, and loyal. It's energetic enough for hunting, but calm and balanced indoors.

He bonds strongly with his family and is exceptionally affectionate and loyal. The Drent is sensitive and learns best with gentle, consistent training—a harsh approach is counterproductive. His intelligence and willingness to please make him easy to train for those with experience and patience.

The Drent is naturally sociable and gets along well with children and other pets, especially if socialized from an early age. It is alert, but not aggressive, and displays a calm yet alert demeanor toward strangers.

Movement & care

The Drentse Partridge Dog is an active and versatile dog that needs plenty of daily exercise. Long walks, retrieving, cycling, or hunting exercises keep it physically and mentally balanced.

Thanks to his hunting background, he has a well-developed sense of smell and enjoys tracking and detection work. He also excels at dog sports such as obedience, agility, and canicross.

The coat is easy to maintain: regular brushing keeps it free of tangles and dirt. During shedding season, extra grooming can help remove loose hair.

Health

The Drentse Patrijshond is generally a healthy and robust breed. Its average life expectancy is around 12 to 14 years.

Important points of attention are:

  • Hip dysplasia (HD)

  • Ear infections due to insufficient ventilation (due to drooping ears)

  • Overweight, especially with too little exercise

A balanced diet, sufficient exercise and regular check-ups at the vet contribute to a long, vital life.

Difference with similar breeds

The Drentse Partridge Dog is often compared to other European hunting dogs, such as the German Shorthaired Pointer and the French Spaniel, but is distinguished by its gentler nature and strong bond with its family.

While some hunting dogs are a bit more aloof, the Drent is sociable, sensitive, and family-oriented. He combines a working spirit with a friendly temperament—a true all-rounder.

Summary

The Drentse Partridge Dog is a versatile, loyal, and sensitive dog with a big heart. It's energetic in the field, but loving and calm at home.

His balanced character, intelligence and affectionate nature make him an ideal companion for active families who love nature, cooperation and a dog with character.
