You buy a hoof knife or claw knife first and foremost for your working hand: a right-handed knife cuts differently from a left-handed one, and a double-edged blade works in both directions. Here you will find knives, nippers, rasps and sharpening supplies for those who trim claws themselves or maintain horses' hooves. These include Aesculap hoof knives, the Aesculap ProCut hoof and claw knife, a narrow Sharp hoof knife and a Danish-style claw knife.
Which knife suits your hand and work
- Right (R) or left (L): choose the version that suits the hand you cut with. Aesculap VC 310 and VC 320 are right-handed, VC 311 and VC 321 left-handed; the ProCut comes in both versions.
- Double (R+L): the VC 315 has a blade that cuts both ways.
- Narrow blade: the Sharp hoof knife has a thin, narrow blade for precise work in the sole edge and the white line.
- Danish style: the Easy claw knife is shaped for trimming cattle claws.
Nippers, rasp and shears
To shorten the bearing edge, you use hoof nippers. The double-leverage version needs less hand strength, and its blades can be replaced separately. The nippers with a side jaw reach awkward corners better. You finish off with a 35 cm hoof rasp with a coarse and a fine side. For sheep there are the 26 cm foot shears and the Claw Clipper Sheep Dutch.
Keeping it sharp
A blunt knife slips and takes effort. Maintain the blade with a whetstone or sharpening paste. If you work with an angle grinder, choose a 115 or 125 mm claw grinding disc; only use it on a machine with a guard. Always cut away from your body and restrain the animal well, for example with equipment from catching and restraining.
More in claw and hoof care
Trimming is often followed by a block or bandage: see hoof blocks and hoof adhesive. Everything for cattle is under cattle hoof care; horse owners see horse hoof care, sheep keepers sheep foot care and goat keepers goat hoof care.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a hoof knife and a claw knife?
Both have a curved blade with a hook. A claw knife is often shaped for the flat sole of cattle claws, a hoof knife for horses' hooves; many knives, such as the ProCut, are intended for both.
Should I choose a left-handed or right-handed knife?
Choose by the hand you cut with. If you are unsure or often switch sides, a double-edged R+L knife is an option.
How do I sharpen a hoof knife?
Keep the blade sharp with a whetstone or sharpening paste; follow the knife's existing sharpening angle.
Can I replace the blades of hoof nippers?
With the double-leverage hoof nippers, yes: the blades are available separately.
