An electric fly killer lures insects with UV light and catches them on a glue board or kills them on an electrified grid. It works day and night without bait, which makes it suitable for indoor spaces such as a canteen, milk room, feed kitchen or domestic kitchen. This collection includes lamps from PestWest, Insect-O-Cutor, Resoluut and Knock Pest, plus replacement UV tubes and starters.
Glue board or grid?
With a glue board, insects stay whole and remain stuck to the board. No debris falls down, and the units make no noise. That is why businesses handling food usually choose this type. Examples are the PestWest Chameleon series, the Insect-O-Cutor Halo and the Resoluut LED 60 and Uplight. Matching replacement glue boards are available for every model.
With a grid, you hear a zap with every catch and the insect falls into a collection tray. You find this type in the Knock Pest insect lamps, from small versions to lamps for rooms up to 150 m². Bear in mind that these lamps can scatter insect fragments, so do not hang them above feed or a worktop.
Placement and maintenance
- Do not hang the lamp opposite a window: daylight competes with the UV light.
- UV tubes lose their attraction over time, even while they still light up. Manufacturers generally advise replacing them every year, preferably before the fly season.
- Replace glue boards as soon as they are full or dusty.
Separate UV tubes are available in various wattages and fittings, including shatterproof BL368 tubes. These have a coating that holds the glass together if it breaks. For some fittings, you also need a separate starter.
Which lamp suits your space?
The wattage and the stated coverage tell you something about the size of the room. A small lamp is enough for a kitchen; a heavier version or several lamps for a large canteen or barn. For flies outdoors or in an open barn, also see fly traps & strips. All products against flies, horseflies and wasps are in flying insects, and if you specifically want to keep a stable fly-free, see fly traps for the stable. Other pests are covered in pest control.
Frequently asked questions
Does an electric fly killer also work in a barn?
Yes, but in a dusty or damp space the unit must be suitable for it. Check the manufacturer's specifications for the application and protection rating.
How often do I replace the UV tube?
Most manufacturers advise once a year, even if the tube still gives light. Check the instructions of the brand you use.
Which type is suitable for a kitchen?
A model with a glue board, because no insect debris flies around. Do not hang it directly above the worktop.
