An automatic chicken coop door slides open in the morning and closes in the evening once the chickens are inside, even when you are not there. It makes you less dependent on fixed times and shuts the door on foxes that go out at dusk. Here you can read how to choose a door that suits your coop.

Opener and door: two parts

An automatic door consists of a drive unit, the opener, and the door itself. The door usually runs vertically in rails; the opener pulls it up with a cord or rod and lowers it again. The door must fit the opening in your coop, and the opener must be strong enough to lift the weight of the door. The range currently includes the Kerbl sliding door with rails in size S, 22 by 33 centimetres: a separate door that you mount in front of an existing opening.

Selection criteria

  • Timer or light sensor: a light sensor follows the seasons automatically. A timer is more predictable, but needs adjusting in spring and autumn. Many openers combine both.
  • Power: batteries are simple but must be replaced in time; mains power needs a socket near the coop; a solar panel works without a cable, as long as it catches enough light.
  • Security: a door that cannot be pushed up from outside keeps a marten out. Also look for a stop in case a chicken is under the closing door.
  • Size of the opening: large breeds need a taller opening than bantams. Measure the opening before choosing a door.

Limitations

A door does not count whether all the chickens are inside. A latecomer is left outside if the door closes on time, so keep an eye on things in the evening for the first few weeks. In frost, a door can freeze in its rails.

More for the coop: coops for two to four chickens, walk-in chicken coops and runs for the door to open onto. Or go back to coop and run.

Frequently asked questions

Does a coop door with a light sensor also work in winter?
Yes, the door opens later and closes earlier, just like daylight. Set the sensitivity so that it does not close during a dark rain shower.

Does the Kerbl sliding door fit every coop?
The 22 by 33 cm door is mounted in front of an existing opening. First check that your opening is smaller than the door and that there is room above the hatch for the rails.

Do I need a power socket?
Only with a mains-powered opener. Battery or solar-powered versions work without a cable.
