Commando Tunnel of Running
Difficulty level: ★★
"Tunnel Run" is a fun and dynamic exercise that's perfect for agility training. It improves your dog's speed, focus, and agility and is a great way to be active together.
How to Teach Your Dog to Run Through a Tunnel
- Choose a safe tunnel: Use a flexible dog tunnel that is wide enough for your dog and remains stable.
- Get your dog used to it: Let your dog explore the tunnel while it's perfectly straight and short. Reward him for curiosity and calm behavior at the tunnel entrance.
- Use a reward: Hold a treat or toy at the end of the tunnel to encourage your dog to walk through.
- Give the command: Say "Tunnel" or "Run" as you guide your dog to the entrance. Encourage him to continue and reward him as soon as he exits the tunnel.
- Extend the Distance: Once your dog is comfortable with the short tunnel, gradually lengthen the tunnel or add a slight curve.
- Reward only on command: Make sure you only reward your dog when he runs through the tunnel after you give the command. If he goes on his own, don't reward him.
- Practice with variation: Change the position of the tunnel and combine the trick with other agility exercises to make it more challenging.
Tips for success
- Start short: Make the tunnel as straight and short as possible at first to help your dog get used to it.
- Use an enthusiastic tone: Encourage your dog in a cheerful voice to give him confidence.
- Work in steps: Reward small steps, such as approaching the entrance or taking a few steps into the tunnel.
- Introduce distractions: Once your dog has mastered the trick, you can practice in busier areas or with other obstacles nearby.
