Command Stand or Two Legs or Sit Nicely

Difficulty level: ★★★★

"Standing Still on Two Legs" is a challenging and impressive trick that improves your dog's balance, strength, and coordination. This trick is also called "Sitting Pretty." It requires focus and confidence from your dog and is a great exercise for physical control and body awareness.

How do you teach your dog to 'Stand still on two legs'?

  1. Start in a sitting position: Have your dog do a “Sit” first so he is in a stable starting position.
  2. Use a treat: Hold a treat above your dog's nose, just high enough to encourage him to lift his front paws.
  3. Give the command: Say "Stand" or "Two paws" as you slowly move the treat upward. Encourage your dog to find his balance as he stands on his hind legs.
  4. Reward small attempts: Reward your dog with a treat and a marker signal such as "Yes" or "Good boy" as soon as he lifts his front paws, even if only for a moment.
  5. Increase the duration: Once your dog is comfortable standing, you can encourage him to stay in the position longer.
  6. Reward only on command: Make sure you only reward your dog when he stands on two legs after you give the command. If he does it on his own, don't reward him.
  7. Add distance: Once your dog has mastered the trick, you can try having him take a step back while standing on two legs.

Tips for success

  • Start slowly: Some dogs need time to find their balance, so work in small steps.
  • Be patient: It's a challenging trick, especially for dogs that aren't used to this type of exercise.
  • Use positive reinforcement: Reward every little progress and encourage your dog enthusiastically.
  • Provide a safe surface: Use a non-slip surface to prevent your dog from slipping.

Why is 'Standing Still on Two Legs' important?

This trick strengthens your dog's core muscles, balance, and coordination. It offers mental and physical challenges and is a great way to have fun together. Plus, it's an impressive trick your dog can show off to friends and family.
