Commando Jump of Over

"Jumping over a hurdle" is a fun and active exercise that physically challenges your dog and improves their coordination and agility. This trick is easy to teach and can be easily expanded to include higher hurdles as your dog gains confidence.

How to Teach Your Dog to Jump Over a Hurdle

  1. Choose a safe obstacle: Use a low, stable object, such as a broomstick on two low blocks. Make sure the obstacle isn't too high, especially at first.
  2. Use a reward: Hold a treat or toy in your hand to motivate your dog.
  3. Give the command: Clearly say "Jump" or "Over" as you move the treat over the hurdle to encourage your dog to jump.
  4. Start low: Get your dog used to the challenge by first stepping over a very low hurdle. Reward him generously as soon as he clears the hurdle.
  5. Increase the challenge: Gradually raise the hurdle a little higher so your dog starts jumping. Reward each successful attempt.
  6. Reward only on command: Make sure you only reward your dog when he jumps after you give the command. If he jumps on his own, don't reward him.
  7. Practice and refine: Work on consistency and add variety by using different obstacles.

Tips for success

  • Start small: Let your dog build confidence with a low hurdle first.
  • Keep it safe: Use a soft surface and make sure the obstacle can easily fall over to prevent injuries.
  • Make it fun: Reward your dog enthusiastically and keep the training playful and positive.
  • Practice slowly: If your dog hesitates, gently guide him with a treat to build his confidence.

Why is Jumping Over a Hurdle important?

This trick improves your dog's coordination, agility, and physical fitness. It's also a great way to challenge him mentally and a fun activity to do together. Moreover, it prepares your dog for more advanced agility exercises.

Troubleshooting during training

  • Is your dog reluctant to jump? Lower the hurdle and use an irresistible treat to encourage him.
  • Is he getting distracted? Practice in a quiet environment before adding more stimuli.
  • Is he jumping past the obstacle? Use a narrow passage or a leash to guide him.
