Command Paw

"Paw-shake" is one of the most popular and fun tricks to teach your dog. It's a simple exercise that provides a great foundation for further training. This trick is not only fun, but it also strengthens the bond between you and your dog through positive interaction.

How do you teach your dog to 'give a paw'?

  1. Start in a sitting position: Have your dog do a “Sit” first so he is in a stable position.
  2. Use a reward: Hold a treat in your hand and let your dog smell it, without giving it right away.
  3. Give the command: Say "Paw" clearly while holding your hand close to his front paw.
  4. Wait for a reaction: If your dog lifts his paw on his own, even slightly, immediately reward him with the treat and a marker signal such as "Yes" or "Yes."
  5. Reward only on command: Make sure you only reward your dog when they offer their paw after you give the command. If they lift their paw on their own without a command, don't reward them.
  6. Add your hand: Once your dog gets the idea, use your hand to gently lift his paw and reward him while saying, “Paw.”
  7. Practice regularly: Repeat this daily in short sessions to reinforce the command.

Tips for success

  • Be patient: Some dogs need more time to understand the connection between the command and their action.
  • Make it fun: Reward your dog generously and use a cheerful tone of voice to keep training interesting.
  • Stay consistent: Always use the same command and hand movement to avoid confusion.
  • Expand: Once your dog understands "Paw," you can expand the trick to "Other Paw" for added variety.

Why is 'Giving a Paw' important?

While primarily a fun exercise, "Paw Shake" contributes to your dog's obedience and confidence. It also helps prepare for more advanced skills, such as "High Five" or "Hug." Plus, it's a social trick that impresses friends and family!

Troubleshooting during training

  • Do you keep lifting their paw? Try to wait more patiently for your dog to take action. Reward even small movements to encourage them.
  • Is your dog unresponsive? Use a stronger reward, like a piece of cheese or sausage, and practice in a quiet environment.
  • Is your dog getting too excited? Take short breaks and stay calm during training.
