What a small keeper needs and what a farm adds

The number of animals mainly determines the size of your equipment. With a handful of cattle, a single calf bottle, a hand pump for drenching and a few disposable syringes are often enough. If you calve several cows per season, a calf puller, a stock of calving drink and a cow drencher with battery-powered pump pay off. A second question is whether you milk: with beef cattle or suckler cows, udder care plays a smaller role, while there are special mineral boluses for beef cattle. If you keep the animals mostly indoors, hoof care and barn hygiene deserve more attention than when they spend most of the year at pasture.

A handy starter kit for a new keeper consists of a halter and cow rope, a calf feeding bucket with spare teats, a hoof knife, a mineral lick and a box of nitrile gloves. From there, you expand to what your farm or hobby demands.

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum I need if I am going to keep two cows?
Think of a halter with cow rope, a mineral lick, a hoof knife or an appointment with a foot trimmer, gloves and, for calves, a feeding bucket or bottle with teat. Discuss vaccinations and worming with your vet.

Do you sell wormers for cattle?
No. Wormers for livestock are veterinary medicines supplied through the vet or an authorised outlet. You will find the equipment here, such as syringes and drench guns.

Is this range also suitable for beef cattle and suckler cows?
Yes. Calf rearing, hoof care, boluses and barn supplies apply to all cattle. There are separate mineral boluses for beef cattle; udder care is mainly intended for dairy cows.
