History of the breed

The Lundehund is a rare breed from Norway, originally bred to hunt puffins along the rocky coasts of the Norwegian Islands. The breed has unique characteristics that enabled it to climb into narrow rock crevices to capture the birds. While the Lundehund's numbers have declined over the years, interest in the breed has increased in recent decades, particularly as a companion dog.

Character and temperament

The Lundehund is a lively and energetic dog, known for its curiosity and playful nature. They are generally friendly but can be somewhat reserved with strangers. Because of their hunting heritage, they have a strong instinct for searching and finding things, making them very intelligent and resourceful. They are affectionate companions for their owners and get along well with other dogs, provided they are properly socialized.

Care

The Lundehund's coat requires regular maintenance, especially during shedding season. Weekly brushing helps remove loose hair and prevents matting. Due to the coat's thickness, it's also important to maintain good hygiene, especially around the ears and feet. The Lundehund requires little other grooming, but regular nail trims and dental care are recommended.

Movement and activity

Lundehunds are very active dogs that need plenty of exercise. They love walking, running, and playing, and they need mentally stimulating activities to feel happy and healthy. Because of their high energy levels, it's important to challenge them regularly, especially with interactive games and hunting-like activities that appeal to their natural instincts.

Health

The Lundehund is generally a healthy breed, but it can be prone to certain genetic conditions, such as hip dysplasia and respiratory problems. Because the breed is genetically limited, some health problems are common, such as an increased risk of stomach problems (such as gastric torsion). It's important to choose a reputable breeder who performs health tests. The Lundehund's life expectancy is typically between 12 and 15 years.

Power supply

The Lundehund needs a diet rich in protein and fat to support its energetic lifestyle. Because they are a smaller breed, they typically need between 150 and 250 grams of quality food per day, depending on their activity level and size. It's important to provide a well-balanced diet to prevent health problems such as stomach torsion.

Training and socialization

The Lundehund is an intelligent dog that learns quickly, but they can sometimes be a bit headstrong. Consistent training and positive reinforcement are best for this breed. Because they have a strong prey drive, early socialization and training are crucial to ensure they get along well with other animals and people. They can be a bit stubborn at times, so patient training is essential.

Suitability for owners

The Lundehund is suitable for active families who have time to provide this energetic dog with sufficient exercise and mental stimulation. Their curiosity and intelligence make them ideal for a home with a yard, but they also require plenty of attention and interaction from their owners. This breed may not be ideal for first-time dog owners due to its independent nature, but it's a great choice for someone with experience who is willing to invest time in training and socialization.
