History of the breed

The Dutch Shepherd is one of the three official herding dog breeds of the Netherlands, along with the Malinois and the German Shepherd . Originally bred for herding livestock and protecting farms, the Dutch Shepherd was primarily used in the western Netherlands, where it proved its versatility as a working dog. They were employed as herding dogs, guard dogs, and even as police dogs. The Dutch Shepherd is an intelligent, versatile breed with excellent working qualities, making it a popular choice for various working dog roles, as well as a companion dog due to its loyalty and devotion.

Character and temperament

The Dutch Shepherd is an intelligent, independent, and loyal dog. They are naturally vigilant and protective, making them excellent watchdogs. This breed needs plenty of exercise and mental stimulation, as they are naturally energetic and curious. They form strong bonds with their family and get along well with children, provided they are properly socialized. The Dutch Shepherd is friendly but can be somewhat reserved with strangers. Their industriousness and intelligence also make them well-suited for various dog sports and training.

Care

The Dutch Shepherd's coat requires a fair amount of maintenance. Weekly brushing is usually sufficient, but during the shedding season (twice a year), more frequent brushing may be necessary to remove loose hair. The dog requires little other grooming, other than occasional nail trimming and ear and teeth checks. The Dutch Shepherd is a relatively low-maintenance dog, but its active nature requires regular exercise and mental stimulation.

Movement and activity

The Dutch Shepherd is a very active dog that needs plenty of daily exercise. They love walking, running, and playing, and need regular physical and mental stimulation to feel happy. This breed is suitable for active families or individuals who have the time to train and challenge their dog. Their working drive makes them adept at dog sports such as agility, obedience, and tracking.

Health

The Dutch Shepherd is generally a healthy breed, but like many working dogs, they can be prone to hip dysplasia and other joint problems. Eye problems, such as progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), can also occur. Regular veterinary checkups are important to ensure the dog's health. The average life expectancy of this breed is between 12 and 15 years.

Power supply

The Dutch Shepherd needs a diet rich in protein and nutrients to support their active lifestyle. They need approximately 400 to 600 grams of good dog food per day, depending on their weight and activity level. It's important to adjust their diet to their energy needs, especially if they exercise a lot or participate in dog sports.

Training and socialization

The Dutch Shepherd is a highly intelligent dog that learns quickly, but is also strong-willed. It's important to provide consistent training and socialization from an early age to ensure they get along well with other dogs, people, and new situations. They respond well to positive reinforcement and excel in obedience and agility training. Early socialization helps develop a well-tempered and well-behaved dog.

Suitability for owners

The Dutch Shepherd is best suited for active owners who are willing to invest significant time and energy in training and exercise. This breed isn't ideal for those seeking a calm dog, as the Dutch Shepherd requires a lot of physical and mental stimulation. They get along well with children and other pets, provided they are properly socialized, but they require an experienced owner who knows how to channel their energy and work ethic.
