Flat-Coated Retriever

Other names

Flatcoat, Flatcoated Retriever

Origin & history

The Flat-Coated Retriever is an energetic and friendly hunting dog breed that originated in England in the 19th century. It was developed by crossing Newfoundland dogs, Setter types, and Collies, with the goal of creating a versatile retriever that could retrieve both on land and in water.

The Flatcoat was long one of the most popular hunting dogs in Great Britain, but later lost that position to the Labrador and Golden Retriever. Nevertheless, it remains beloved by connoisseurs today for its optimistic nature, elegance, and working spirit.

Appearance & body shape

The Flat-Coated Retriever is a medium-sized, athletic, and graceful dog with a long, flowing build. Its movements are smooth and powerful, with a natural elegance.

The coat is smooth, dense, and glossy, slightly wavy, and water-repellent—ideal for field work or in the water. The colors are deep black or liver (chocolate brown).

Its eyes are dark and kind, with a cheerful, intelligent expression. Its tail is carried gaily, and its ears hang close to its head.

Format

  • Males: 58–61 cm height at the withers

  • Bitches: 55–58 cm height at the withers

  • Weight: 25–36 kg

Character & temperament

The Flat-Coated Retriever is known as the eternal optimist among retrievers. He's friendly, enthusiastic, and always eager to interact with people.

He combines intelligence with a tremendous will to please, making him highly trainable. This dog thrives on teamwork and is sensitive to vocalizations—strict training isn't necessary; on the contrary, it will dampen his enthusiasm.

The Flatcoat is playful and cheerful, even in old age. This makes him a wonderful companion, but his energy can sometimes be a bit overwhelming for inexperienced owners. He needs structure and activity to stay happy.

Good with children and other pets

The Flat-Coated Retriever is generally great with children: he's gentle, patient, and playful. However, his lively nature does require some caution with young children, as he can be unintentionally clumsy in his enthusiasm.

He's a good fit for active families who can offer him time, attention, and exercise. This breed is less suitable for families who are rarely home or have limited time—the Flatcoat thrives on human companionship and daily activity.

He's sociable and friendly with other dogs. He gets along well with cats, especially if he's been introduced to them from a young age.

In short: a loving family dog for active families who love outdoor life and play.

Movement & care

The Flat-Coated Retriever is an active dog with lots of energy. It needs daily exercise: long walks, swimming, retrieving, or dog sports like obedience or hunting training.

Without enough exercise, he may become bored and come up with his own "projects," such as digging or chewing. Mental stimulation—such as retrieving or scent games—is just as important as physical activity.

The coat requires moderate care: brush twice a week to prevent tangles, and dry and brush out after swimming or muddy walks.

Health

The Flat-Coated Retriever is a generally healthy breed, but there are some conditions that breeders should be aware of:

  • Cancer (hemangiosarcoma, lymphoma) is unfortunately relatively common

  • Hip dysplasia (HD)

  • Patellar luxation (loose kneecap)

  • Eye problems

The average life expectancy is around 8 to 10 years, which is slightly shorter than for other retrievers. A healthy lifestyle and responsible breeding are crucial.

Difference with similar breeds

The Flat-Coated Retriever is similar in build to the Labrador and Golden Retriever, but is lighter, more elegant, and more energetic. While the Labrador is calmer and more stable, the Flat-Coated is more enthusiastic and playful.

His temperament is also more sensitive and affectionate — he is a real “people pleaser” who finds it difficult to be alone.

Summary

The Flat-Coated Retriever is a cheerful, energetic, and gentle dog with a heart of gold. He combines intelligence with playfulness, and loyalty with a zest for life.

For families who are active, enjoy the outdoors and have time to spend with their dog, the Flatcoat is a wonderful companion.
However, for those with little time or space, this breed may be too intense.

A Flat-Coated Retriever brings sunshine into your home — provided you give his energy and loving nature the space he deserves.
