Field Spaniel, English Field Spaniel

Origin & history

The Field Spaniel is an elegant and rare spaniel that originated in England in the 19th century. It was originally bred as a hunting dog for tracking and retrieving game in fields and marshes.

Initially, the breed was developed from crosses between the Cocker Spaniel, Sussex Spaniel, and other early spaniel lines. In the early 20th century, the Field Spaniel nearly fell into decline due to an excessive focus on appearance, but through careful breeding, its original balance between beauty and working power was restored.

Today, the Field Spaniel remains a relatively rare breed, but is prized for its friendly nature, intelligence, and versatility—both in the field and at home.

Appearance & body shape

The Field Spaniel is a medium-sized, well-balanced, and graceful dog. Its body is slightly longer than it is tall, giving it a flowing, streamlined appearance.

The coat is glossy, silky, and semi-long, with a slight wave and beautiful feathering on the ears, chest, legs, and tail. The most common colors are solid black, liver, or rust, sometimes with subtle markings.

Its eyes are large and dark, with a gentle, alert expression. Its long, low-set ears give it the characteristically charming spaniel appearance.

Format

  • Males: 45–48 cm height at the withers

  • Bitches: 43–46 cm height at the withers

  • Weight: 18–25 kg

Character & temperament

The Field Spaniel is intelligent, friendly, and well-balanced. It has a gentle nature and is known for its affection and reliability.

Although originally bred as a hunting dog, he's equally at home as a companion dog. He's curious, eager to learn, and loves to cooperate. His even temperament makes him less energetic than some other spaniels, yet he's still lively and alert.

He is sensitive and sociable, and responds best to gentle, consistent training. Harsh corrections don't suit his nature—he prefers to learn through praise and reward.

Good with children and other pets

The Field Spaniel is excellent with children. His gentle nature, patience, and playfulness make him a wonderful family dog. He enjoys attention, cuddles, and quiet playtime.

He generally gets along well with other dogs, especially when socialized from an early age. He's also generally tolerant of cats and other pets—he has a friendly, stable nature and little tendency toward dominance.

His calm temperament and sociable disposition make him a trustworthy family companion, ideal for families with children and other animals.

Movement & care

The Field Spaniel is an active and intelligent dog that needs daily exercise. Long walks, games of fetch, or tracking will keep him physically and mentally satisfied.

He enjoys being outdoors and has a natural talent for tracking, swimming, and retrieving. Without sufficient challenge, he can become bored, so variety is important.

The coat requires regular maintenance: brushing two to three times a week prevents tangles, especially behind the ears and on the legs. A visit to the groomer to keep the coat neat is occasionally necessary.

Health

The Field Spaniel is generally a healthy breed, with an average life expectancy of 12 to 14 years.

Points of interest:

  • Ear infections (due to the long, hanging ears)

  • Hip dysplasia (HD)

  • Eye problems such as cataracts

  • Overweight due to lack of exercise

Good nutrition, sufficient exercise and regular check-ups at the vet will help keep him healthy and vital.

Difference with similar breeds

The Field Spaniel resembles the English Cocker Spaniel, but is larger, calmer, and more elegantly built. While the Cocker Spaniel is more playful and energetic, the Field Spaniel exudes more calmness and dignity.

Compared to the Springer Spaniel, it's smaller and less energetic, but equally intelligent and versatile. Its calm nature makes it particularly suitable for families seeking a well-balanced, sociable dog.

Summary

The Field Spaniel is an elegant, gentle, and loyal dog with a warm heart. He combines intelligence with charm, energy with calmness—and is always loyal to his family.

For families or individuals who love nature, companionship and a dog with a balanced personality, the Field Spaniel is a wonderful companion: friendly, reliable and always cheerful.
