Origin & history
The English Springer Spaniel is one of the oldest British hunting dog breeds and the progenitor of many modern spaniels. Its history dates back to the 16th century, when it was used to "spring" game for the hunter.
The breed was officially distinguished from the Cocker Spaniel in the 19th century — both originally came from the same litters, but the larger dogs were called “Springers” and the smaller “Cockers”.
Its versatility, reliability and infectious enthusiasm quickly made the English Springer Spaniel popular, not only as a working dog in the field, but also as a loyal family dog.
Appearance & body shape
The English Springer Spaniel is a medium-sized, well-muscled dog with a powerful yet elegant build. Its body is compact and balanced, with smooth, energetic movements.
The coat is medium-length, dense, and slightly wavy, with longer feathering on the ears, chest, legs, and tail. The colors are usually liver-brown and white or black and white, sometimes with tan markings.
His expressive eyes and long, low-set ears give him a soft, friendly look — characteristic of the breed.

Character & temperament
The English Springer Spaniel is friendly, cheerful, and affectionate. He's known for his optimistic nature and constant enthusiasm—a dog whose tail is literally always wagging.
He's intelligent and eager to learn, making him easy to train. With positive training, he learns quickly and enjoys working with his owner. His sensitivity requires a gentle, consistent approach.
Springers are true people dogs: they love company, are sociable with everyone, and are highly adaptable. They love attention and find it difficult to be left alone for long periods of time.
Good with children and other pets
The English Springer Spaniel is an excellent family dog. He is friendly, playful, and patient with children, and is known for his gentle and trusting nature. His cheerful energy makes him an ideal playmate for active families.
He almost always gets along well with other dogs. Thanks to his sociable nature and gentle temperament, he's also often friendly toward cats and other pets, especially if he's been accustomed to them from an early age.
He is rarely aggressive and does not seek conflict — harmony and sociability are in his nature.
Movement & care
The English Springer Spaniel is an active, athletic dog with a great need for exercise and mental stimulation. Daily long walks, swimming, retrieving, or tracking are ideal for him.
He was bred to work in the fields all day, so a daily walk around the house isn't enough. Without enough exercise, he can become bored and exhibit unwanted behavior.
The coat requires regular maintenance: brushing at least twice a week to remove tangles and dirt, and periodic trimming around the ears and paws. The long, drooping ears must be kept clean to prevent ear infections.
Health
The English Springer Spaniel is generally a healthy breed with a life expectancy of 12 to 14 years.
Points of attention are:
-
Ear infections (due to moisture or dirt in the long ears)
-
Hip dysplasia (HD)
-
Progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) — an inherited eye condition
-
Allergies or skin problems
With regular care, a healthy diet and sufficient exercise, he will remain fit and vital.
Difference with similar breeds
The English Springer Spaniel is often compared to the Cocker Spaniel, but the Springer is larger, more athletic, and calmer by nature. While the Cocker is more lively and sometimes more headstrong, the Springer is more focused on cooperation and obedience.
Compared to the Field Spaniel, the Springer has a lighter frame and more energy, making it more suitable for active family life and field work.
Summary
The English Springer Spaniel is a cheerful, loyal, and energetic dog that loves company, exercise, and adventure. He combines intelligence with sensitivity and is as reliable as he is playful.
For active families looking for a sociable, affectionate dog that wants to be there for everything, the Springer is a perfect choice — a true friend with a wagging soul.
