Command At the Foot or Next to
The "Heel" command (also called "Next") is essential for relaxed walks with your dog. It teaches your dog to walk politely beside you without pulling on the leash, which benefits both your walking enjoyment and safety. This command can be challenging, but with patience and consistency, you can learn it successfully.
How do you teach your dog to "Heel"?
- Start in a quiet environment: Choose a place without distractions, such as your garden or a quiet street, so your dog can concentrate.
- Choose a reward side: Always have your dog walk on the same side (for example, the left), so he understands where he should be.
- Use a treat: Hold a treat in your hand, close to your leg, to lure your dog into the correct position.
- Give the command: Say "Heel" or another clear command as you begin walking slowly. Hold the treat close to your leg to keep your dog at your side.
- Reward correct behavior: As soon as your dog walks nicely beside you without pulling, immediately reward him with a treat and a marker signal such as "Yes" or "Yes."
- Correct gently: If your dog pulls forward or lags behind, stop walking and lure him back to the correct position with the treat.
- Practice and expand: Start with short walks and gradually add more distractions and longer distances.
Tips for success
- Be consistent: Always use the same command and only reward when your dog actually walks next to you.
- Start Slow: Keep the pace slow while your dog learns where to stay.
- Make it fun: Don't just reward with treats, but also with praise and a playtime after training.
- Use a short leash: A leash of 1 to 1.5 meters gives you more control than a flexible retractable leash.
Why is 'At the Foot' important?
This command not only makes walks more comfortable but also safer. It prevents your dog from unexpectedly running away or pulling in dangerous situations, such as a busy street or other dogs. Moreover, it strengthens your communication and trust while walking.
Troubleshooting during training
- Is your dog still pulling? Stop walking immediately and wait for him to return to the correct position.
- Is your dog losing focus? Choose an environment with fewer distractions and gradually increase the challenge.
- Is your dog not interested in the treat? Try something irresistible, like cheese or sausage, to get his attention.
