Chinese Crested Dog
Alternative names: Chinese Crested Dog, Chinese Crested Dog
History of the breed
The Chinese Crested Dog is a striking and unique dog breed with mysterious origins. Although its name suggests it originated in China, there are indications that its ancestors may have originated in Africa or Central America. Chinese traders reportedly kept these dogs aboard their ships to control vermin, after which the breed spread worldwide. Today, the Chinese Crested Dog is a beloved companion dog, known for its elegant appearance and playful nature.
Character and temperament
The Chinese Crested Dog is affectionate, intelligent, and playful. It bonds strongly with its owner and enjoys being around people. This breed is sociable and friendly, but can sometimes be a bit shy with strangers. It is alert and curious, making it a good watchdog without being overly vocal. Due to its sensitive nature, it requires gentle, positive training.

Care and shedding
Grooming depends on the coat variety. The hairless variety requires regular skincare to prevent dryness or irritation. A mild moisturizer and sunscreen can help keep the skin healthy. The powderpuff variety needs brushing several times a week to prevent tangles. Both varieties shed very little, making them popular with allergy sufferers.
Movement and activity
The Chinese Crested Dog is energetic but doesn't require intensive exercise. Short walks and indoor play sessions are often sufficient. This breed loves to play with its owner and is surprisingly agile. Despite its delicate appearance, it's a true acrobat who enjoys agility training and interactive games.
Barking
This breed has an average bark. It will alert you when it notices something unusual, but it's not an overly vocal dog. Early socialization helps prevent excessive barking.
Good with kids?
The Chinese Crested Dog gets along well with children, provided they handle it gently. Its small and fragile body makes it less suitable for rough play. It's a better fit for families with older children who treat a dog respectfully.
Health
The Chinese Crested Dog is generally a healthy breed, but may be prone to:
- Dental problems, especially in the hairless variety
- Skin problems such as acne and sunburn
- Patellar luxation (loose kneecaps)
- Eye problems such as progressive retinal atrophy
The average life expectancy is 13-16 years.
Power supply
Due to its small size, this breed only needs a small amount of food per day. An adult Chinese Crested Dog eats an average of 100-200 grams of food per day, depending on its weight and activity level. Good oral hygiene and appropriate kibble can help reduce dental problems.
Training and socialization
The Chinese Crested Dog is intelligent and eager to learn, making it easy to train. It responds best to gentle, positive training techniques. This breed has a sensitive nature and can become anxious if corrected harshly. Early socialization helps it become confident and sociable.
Suitability for owners
This breed is perfect for those looking for a playful and affectionate companion dog. It fits well in apartments and smaller homes, as long as it receives plenty of attention. Due to its sensitive skin and small size, it's less suited to rough outdoor play or extreme weather conditions.
