Chinese Imperial Dog
Alternative names: Imperial Shih Tzu, Lion Dog, Princess Shih Tzu
History of the breed
The Chinese Imperial Dog is a small dog that originated in China. Originally considered a variety of the Shih Tzu, they have been recognized as a distinct and unique breed since 2005. This small, lion-like dog was a constant companion of the imperial family within the Imperial Palace. In the 1970s, breeders began selecting the smallest dogs from their lines to create a smaller version of the Shih Tzu, resulting in the Chinese Imperial Dog. Although closely related to the Shih Tzu, they are characterized by their smaller size and delicate build.
Character and temperament
The Chinese Imperial Dog is known for its cheerful, intelligent, and outgoing nature. They are playful, affectionate, and enjoy the company of their family. These dogs adapt well to a variety of living environments and are suitable for both apartments and houses with gardens. They are alert and can make good watchdogs, although their small size does not make them suitable as protectors.

Care and shedding
The Chinese Imperial Dog's long, silky coat requires regular grooming to prevent tangles and mats. Daily brushing is recommended to keep the coat in optimal condition. They shed moderately, and regular grooming helps control loose hair. It's also important to keep their ears clean, their teeth brushed regularly, and their nails trimmed.
Movement and activity
Although the Chinese Imperial Dog is small, it needs daily exercise to stay healthy and happy. Short walks and indoor play sessions are usually enough to meet its energy needs. They are sensitive to extreme temperatures, so it's important to protect them from both heat and cold during outdoor activities.
Barking
These dogs can be vocal and will bark to alert their owners to unfamiliar sounds or visitors. Early training and socialization can help minimize excessive barking and encourage desirable behavior.
Good with kids?
The Chinese Imperial Dog is generally good with children and can be a wonderful companion for families. However, due to their small size, it's important to teach children how to interact with the dog gently and respectfully to avoid accidental injuries.
Health
While the Chinese Imperial Dog is generally healthy, they can be prone to certain health conditions common in small breeds, such as:
- Patellar luxation (loose kneecaps)
- Dental problems
- Breathing problems due to their short snout
Regular veterinary check-ups and a good diet can help prevent or detect these problems early.
Power supply
A balanced diet specifically formulated for small breeds is essential for the Chinese Imperial Dog. Due to their small stomachs, it's recommended to divide their daily food intake into two to three meals. Always provide fresh drinking water and avoid giving table scraps or food that could be harmful to dogs.
Training and socialization
The Chinese Imperial Dog is intelligent and learns quickly, but can sometimes have an independent streak. Early socialization and obedience training are crucial for developing a well-behaved dog. Positive reinforcement techniques, such as treats and praise, work best with this breed. Consistency and patience from the owner are essential for achieving successful training results.
Suitability for owners
This breed is suitable for owners seeking a small, affectionate companion. They are well-suited to both singles and families and can adapt to apartment or house life. Because of their need for companionship and attention, they do best in homes where they won't be left alone for long periods.
