Chinese Chongqing Dog
Alternative names: Chongqing Dog, East Sichuan Dog
History of the breed
The Chinese Chongqing Dog is an ancient breed that originated in the Chongqing region of China. It is believed that this breed already existed during the Han Dynasty (206 BC – 220 AD), as evidenced by pottery figures found in tombs in the Jiangbei area of Chongqing. Originally, these dogs were used for hunting in the mountainous regions of eastern Sichuan and as guard dogs. Due to rapid urbanization, their numbers declined, but since the 1970s, efforts have been made to revive the breed.

The Chongqing Dog is known for its intelligence, independence, and courage. They are loyal to their family and serve as devoted working dogs and companions. Although they have a strong prey drive and love adventure, they are generally good with children and serve as alert and loyal watchdogs.

Care and shedding
The Chongqing Dog has a short, coarse coat that requires minimal grooming. Weekly brushing is sufficient to keep the coat in good condition and remove loose hair. This breed sheds moderately and has little odor. Regular checks of the ears, teeth, and nails are important to prevent health problems.
Movement and activity
As an active and athletic dog, the Chongqing Dog needs plenty of daily exercise. Long walks, play sessions, and mental stimulation are essential to meet their energy needs. Due to their strong prey drive, it's important to keep them leashed in unfenced areas.
Barking
The Chongqing Dog is alert and has a loud, deep bark. They bark primarily to alert their owner to unusual activity or intruders, but are generally not overly vocal. Early socialization and training can help minimize unwanted barking behavior.
Good with kids?
With proper socialization, the Chongqing Dog gets along well with children. They are generally patient and tolerant, but due to their energy level and size, it's important to supervise interactions with young children. Children should learn how to treat the dog respectfully to promote a harmonious relationship.
Health
There are no known hereditary health problems specific to this breed. Generally, the Chongqing Dog is a healthy and robust breed. Regular veterinary checkups, a balanced diet, and sufficient exercise contribute to their overall health and well-being.
Power supply
A balanced diet rich in protein and fat is essential for the Chongqing Dog to support their energy levels. The amount of food depends on their age, weight, and activity level, but on average, an adult dog needs about 300-500 grams of high-quality dry food per day, divided into two meals. Always provide fresh drinking water.
Training and socialization
The Chongqing Dog is intelligent and learns quickly, but can sometimes be stubborn. Early socialization and obedience training are crucial for developing a well-behaved dog. Positive reinforcement techniques, such as treats and praise, work best with this breed. Consistency and patience from the owner are essential for achieving successful training results.
Suitability for owners
This breed is suitable for active owners who are willing to invest time and energy in exercise and training. The Chongqing Dog is a good fit for families with older children and experienced dog owners familiar with independent breeds. Due to their high energy levels and need for space, they are less suitable for apartment living or for owners with an inactive lifestyle.
