History of the breed

The Chihuahua is one of the smallest dog breeds in the world and originated in Mexico. The breed is named after the Mexican state of Chihuahua, where it was discovered in the 19th century. The Chihuahua is often associated with the ancient Toltec and Aztec civilizations, where small dogs like the Techichi played an important role in religion and culture. Today, the Chihuahua is a beloved companion dog, known for its big personality in a small body.

Character and temperament

The Chihuahua is an alert, lively, and affectionate dog. Despite its small size, it has a confident and sometimes even bold character. This breed bonds strongly with its owner and is often very loyal, but can sometimes be wary of strangers. The Chihuahua is playful, curious, and enjoys attention, making it an excellent companion dog. It gets along well with other pets, but its delicate size requires caution around young children.

Physical characteristics

  • Shoulder height: 15-23 cm.
  • Weight: 1.5-3 kg.
  • Coat: Two varieties: short-haired and long-haired.
  • Colors: Many variations, including black, white, fawn, brown, cream, and combinations thereof.
  • Sizes for collars and harnesses: Neck circumference 20-30 cm, chest circumference 30-40 cm.

Care

A Chihuahua's grooming needs depend on its coat type. Short-haired Chihuahuas are low-maintenance and require only occasional brushing, while long-haired Chihuahuas require weekly brushing to prevent tangles. Check their ears regularly, trim their nails as needed, and ensure good dental care, as Chihuahuas are prone to dental problems.

Movement and activity

Although the Chihuahua is small, it needs daily exercise. Short walks and playtime indoors or in the yard are enough to keep it healthy and happy. This breed is energetic and enjoys interactive play, but overexertion should be avoided due to its fragile build.

Health

The Chihuahua is a relatively healthy breed, but can be prone to:

  • Patellar luxation (dislocation of the kneecap)
  • Dental problems
  • Heart problems, such as mitral valve disease
  • Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar)
The average life expectancy is 12-20 years, making it one of the longest-living dog breeds.

Power supply

Due to its small size, the Chihuahua only needs a small amount of food. An adult Chihuahua eats an average of 50-100 grams of food per day, depending on its weight, age, and activity level. Choose a food with high-quality proteins and healthy fats, and adjust portion sizes to prevent obesity.

Training and socialization

The Chihuahua is intelligent and learns quickly, but can sometimes be stubborn. Positive reinforcement and patience are essential when training this breed. Early socialization is important to ensure they feel comfortable in various situations and interact well with other animals and people.

Suitability for owners

The Chihuahua is ideal for owners looking for a small, affectionate companion dog. It fits well in apartments and houses, as long as it gets enough attention and exercise. This breed is suitable for families with older children who understand how to handle it gently. The Chihuahua is less suitable for people who spend a lot of time outdoors, as it forms a strong bond with its owner.
