Cesky Fousek
Alternative names: Bohemian Wirehaired Pointer, Czech Pointer
History of the breed
The Cesky Fousek is an ancient hunting dog breed from the Czech Republic, where it has been used for centuries as a versatile hunting dog. It belongs to the pointing group and is particularly suited for work in the field, water, and forest. This breed was nearly extinct after the First World War, but thanks to targeted breeding programs, the population was revived. Today, the Cesky Fousek is still prized by hunters, but it is also gaining popularity as an active family dog.
Character and temperament
The Cesky Fousek is intelligent, energetic, and very devoted to its owner. It is eager to learn and easy to train, but has a strong desire to work and hunt. This breed is sociable and friendly, making it a good fit for a family. It is affectionate and loves spending time with its people, but can sometimes be reserved with strangers. Due to its hunting instincts, it can have a strong prey drive, which requires training and proper socialization.

Care and shedding
The Cesky Fousek's rough coat requires regular maintenance. Weekly brushing helps remove dirt and loose hair. During shedding season, it sheds moderately, but plucking dead hairs can help keep its coat in good condition. Regularly checking its ears and trimming its nails is important for its overall health.
Movement and activity
This breed is very active and needs plenty of exercise. Long walks, retrieving, swimming, and dog sports like tracking and agility are ideal for keeping them physically and mentally challenged. The Cesky Fousek is not a dog for an inactive owner or a small apartment.
Barking
The Cesky Fousek has an average bark and will primarily use its voice when excited or suspicious. It's not an overly vocal dog, but its alertness ensures it will alert its owner when necessary.
Good with kids?
The Cesky Fousek is friendly and playful and gets along well with children. Its energetic nature makes it suitable for families who want to actively engage with their dog. However, it's important that children learn how to interact with a dog respectfully, especially since it can sometimes get excited during play.
Health
The Cesky Fousek is generally a healthy breed, but may be prone to:
- Hip dysplasia
- Elbow dysplasia
- Eye problems such as entropion
The average life expectancy is 12-14 years.
Power supply
Due to its high energy expenditure, the Cesky Fousek requires a nutritious diet rich in protein and healthy fats. An adult dog eats an average of 400-700 grams of food per day, depending on its activity level. Divide meals into two portions to ensure a stable energy supply.
Training and socialization
The Cesky Fousek is intelligent and obedient, making it relatively easy to train. It learns quickly and responds well to positive reinforcement. Early socialization helps it get along well with other animals and people. Because it can have a strong prey drive, it's important to combine training with clear boundaries and control.
Suitability for owners
This breed is suitable for active and experienced dog owners who can devote plenty of time to exercise, training, and mental stimulation. It's ideal for those who enjoy outdoor activities like hiking, hunting, or dog sports. Due to its high energy and drive to work, it's less suitable for those looking for a calm family dog without a clear task.
