Canaan Dog
Alternative names: Canaan Dog, Israeli Shepherd.
History of the breed
The Canaan Dog is one of the oldest dog breeds in the world, originating from the Middle East. Centuries ago, these dogs were used by the nomadic Bedouins to guard and protect flocks. The breed has largely retained its natural instincts and adaptability. Thanks to its ability to survive in extreme conditions, the Canaan Dog was later employed as a guard dog, mine detector, and companion dog. Today, it is still prized for its versatility and loyalty.
Character and temperament
The Canaan Dog is an alert, intelligent, and independent dog. It has a strong protective instinct and bonds strongly with its family. This breed is friendly but can be reserved with strangers. It is sensitive and learns quickly, but needs a confident and consistent owner. Its natural alertness makes it an excellent watchdog, while its playful nature makes it suitable for active families.
Physical characteristics
- Height at the withers: 50-60 cm (male), 45-50 cm (female).
- Weight: 18-25 kg.
- Coat: Double coat with a short, harsh topcoat and a soft undercoat.
- Colors: Various colors, including sandy, red, white, black, or spotted.
- Sizes for collars and harnesses: Neck circumference 40-50 cm, chest circumference 60-75 cm.
Care
The Canaan Dog has a self-cleaning coat that requires little maintenance. Weekly brushing is usually sufficient to remove loose hair and keep the coat in good condition. More frequent brushing is recommended during shedding season. Check its ears regularly, trim its nails as needed, and ensure it has good dental care.
Movement and activity
This breed is active and needs daily exercise. Long walks, runs, and challenging games keep them physically and mentally healthy. They enjoy activities that allow them to use their natural instincts, such as tracking or agility. The Canaan Dog thrives in an environment where they are challenged both physically and mentally.
Health
The Canaan Dog is generally a healthy breed, but may be prone to:
- Hip dysplasia
- Eye problems, such as progressive retinal atrophy (PRA)
- Thyroid problems
The average life expectancy is 12-14 years.
Power supply
A balanced diet is essential for the Canaan Dog. They need approximately 300-400 grams of food daily, depending on their weight, age, and activity level. Choose a food with high-quality proteins and healthy fats. Divide the food into two meals a day to prevent digestive problems.
Training and socialization
The Canaan Dog is intelligent and learns quickly, but can have an independent nature. A gentle but consistent training approach works best. Start socialization early to ensure they are comfortable in different situations and interact well with other animals and people. Varied training prevents boredom and strengthens the bond with their owner.
Suitability for owners
The Canaan Dog is suitable for active and experienced dog owners who understand its natural instincts and independent nature. It's a good fit for families with older children and those who enjoy outdoor activities. This breed is less suitable for owners who have little time to provide it with exercise and mental stimulation. With sufficient attention and guidance, the Canaan Dog is a loyal and loving companion.
