History of the breed

The Bushland Terrier is a relatively new breed created by crossing the Cairn Terrier and the Scottish Terrier. It combines the best traits of both terriers and is known for its compact size and playful nature. Although less well-known than its parent breeds, the Bushland Terrier is slowly gaining popularity as a companion dog.

Character and temperament

The Bushland Terrier is a lively, intelligent, and devoted dog. It's energetic, has a strong prey drive, and loves to play. This breed is affectionate with its family but can also have an independent side. It's watchful and alert, making it a suitable small guard dog. It gets along well with children and other pets, provided it's properly socialized from an early age.

Physical characteristics

  • Shoulder height : 25-30 cm.
  • Weight : 6-9 kg.
  • Coat : Dense, wiry and weather resistant.
  • Colors : Variations of black, gray, red or brindle.
  • Sizes for collars and harnesses : Neck circumference 25-35 cm, chest circumference 40-50 cm.

Care

The Bushland Terrier's coat requires regular brushing to prevent tangles and keep it in good condition. It should be hand-stripped twice a year. Check the ears regularly, keep the nails trimmed, and ensure good dental care to prevent dental problems.

Movement and activity

Although the Bushland Terrier is small, it has a high energy level and needs plenty of exercise. Daily walks and play sessions are important for physical and mental stimulation. Its hunting instincts also make it enjoy activities like tracking and searching.

Health

The Bushland Terrier is generally a healthy breed, but may be prone to:

  • Patellar luxation (loose kneecaps)
  • Hip dysplasia
  • Eye problems, such as cataracts
  • Allergies

The average life expectancy is 12-15 years.

Power supply

A balanced diet with high-quality ingredients is essential. On average, a Bushland Terrier eats 100-150 grams of food per day, depending on their weight and activity level. Make sure the food contains enough protein to support their energetic lifestyle.

Training and socialization

The Bushland Terrier is intelligent and learns quickly, but it can also be stubborn. Positive reinforcement works best, combined with consistency. Start socialization early to get them used to different situations, people, and other animals.

Suitability for owners

The Bushland Terrier is perfect for active families or individuals looking for a small, energetic dog with a big personality. This breed is suitable for owners who enjoy interactive play and want to dedicate time to training and exercise. It can thrive in an apartment as long as it gets enough exercise, but is most comfortable in a house with a yard where it can burn off energy. The Bushland Terrier is a good fit for those who want a devoted, cheerful dog and are willing to take its grooming and training needs seriously. It is less suitable for families with limited time or no experience with terrier breeds due to its independent and sometimes stubborn nature.
