History of the breed
The Bernese Mountain Dog is one of the four Swiss Mountain Dogs and originates from the Swiss Alps. This breed was originally bred as a working dog for pulling carts, guarding farms, and herding cattle. The name "Sennen" refers to the farmers and shepherds of the Alps. Thanks to its versatility and loyal nature, the Bernese Mountain Dog quickly became a popular companion dog.
Character and temperament
The Bernese Mountain Dog is known for its friendly, gentle, and patient nature. It makes an excellent family dog, getting along well with children and other pets. This breed is intelligent and eager to learn, but requires a gentle approach due to its sensitive nature. Bernese Mountain Dogs are sociable and form strong bonds with their families.
Physical characteristics
- Height at the withers : 64-70 cm (male), 58-66 cm (female).
- Weight : 35-55 kg.
- Coat : Long, glossy, and slightly wavy with a thick undercoat.
- Colors : Tricolor (black, white, and rust brown).
- Sizes for collars and harnesses : Neck circumference 50-70 cm, chest circumference 80-100 cm.
Care
The Bernese Mountain Dog's thick coat requires regular grooming. Weekly brushing is sufficient to remove tangles and loose hair, but more frequent brushing is necessary during shedding seasons. Check the ears for dirt, keep the nails trimmed, and ensure good dental care.
Movement and activity
Although the Bernese Mountain Dog has a calm temperament, they still need plenty of exercise. Daily walks and playtime in the yard or park are important. They also enjoy dog sports like obedience training and cart pulling.
Health
The Bernese Mountain Dog has a life expectancy of 7-10 years and is prone to some health problems, such as:
- Hip dysplasia
- Elbow dysplasia
- Bloat (gastric torsion)
- Cancer (especially histiocytosis)
Power supply
A balanced diet is essential for keeping this large breed healthy. On average, a Bernese Mountain Dog needs 400-600 grams of food per day, depending on its weight, age, and activity level. Divide the food into two meals a day.
Training and socialization
Bernese Mountain Dogs are intelligent and eager to please their owners, making them relatively easy to train. Use positive reinforcement and begin socialization early to prevent them from becoming shy or fearful.
