Belgian Shepherd Dog (Laekense)

  • Alternative names: Laekense Shepherd, Belgian Shepherd Laekense.

History of the breed

The Belgian Shepherd Dog (Laekenois) is one of four varieties of the Belgian Shepherd Dog, along with the Groenendael, Malinois, and Tervueren. This variety is named after the Royal Castle of Laeken in Belgium, where it was used as a guard dog and herding dog. Its rough coat distinguishes the Laekenois from the other varieties. The breed was developed in the 19th century and is known for its versatility and work ethic.

Character and temperament

The Laekenois Shepherd is an alert, intelligent, and courageous dog. It is loyal and protective of its family, but can be reserved with strangers. This breed is independent and energetic, making it important to provide it with sufficient exercise and mental stimulation. The Laekenois requires a consistent but loving owner who understands how to manage its strong will.

Physical characteristics

  • Height at the withers : 58-66 cm (male), 55-62 cm (female).
  • Weight : 25-35 kg.
  • Coat : Dense and wire-haired, with a tousled appearance.
  • Colors : Fawn (yellow/brown) with black shading, especially on the face and ears.
  • Sizes for collars and harnesses : Neck circumference 45-60 cm, chest circumference 70-90 cm.

Care

The Laekenois's rough coat requires regular grooming. Weekly brushing helps keep the coat clean and tangle-free, and more frequent brushing is recommended during shedding season. This coat doesn't need frequent bathing, as this can damage its natural oils. Check the ears, teeth, and nails regularly.

Movement and activity

The Laekenois is an energetic breed that needs intensive daily exercise. Long walks, running, and dog sports like tracking, obedience, and agility are ideal. They also need mental stimulation to prevent boredom, such as puzzles or training sessions.

Health

The Laekenois Shepherd is a generally healthy breed, but some health problems may occur, such as:

  • Hip dysplasia
  • Elbow dysplasia
  • Eye problems, such as cataracts
  • Epilepsy

The average life expectancy is 12-14 years.

Power supply

A diet with high-quality ingredients and a good balance of protein and fat is essential. The Laekenois eats an average of 300-500 grams of food per day, depending on its weight, age, and activity level. Divide the food into two meals to reduce the risk of digestive problems.

Training and socialization

The Laekenois Shepherd is intelligent and eager to learn, but can be stubborn. Early socialization and consistent, positive training are essential. He needs an owner experienced with working dogs and willing to invest time in his education. Training should be challenging and varied to maintain his interest.

Suitability for owners

The Laekenois is suitable for active owners with experience with dogs and sufficient time for exercise, training, and social interaction. They feel most at home in a house with a garden and with people who enjoy spending time outdoors.
