History

The Azerbaijani Shepherd Dog, also known as the Caucasian Owcharka, originates from the Caucasus region, including Azerbaijan. This breed is an ancient working dog, bred to protect livestock from predators and intruders. Their strength, courage, and independence have made them vital in protecting herds in mountainous areas.

Character and Temperament

The Azerbaijani Shepherd Dog is courageous, vigilant, and highly protective. They are loyal to their family and can become strongly attached to their owners. Due to their independent and dominant nature, they are less suitable for inexperienced owners. Early socialization and training are essential to manage their protective instincts.

Health

The Azerbaijani Shepherd Dog is generally a robust breed, but can be susceptible to:

  • Hip dysplasia

  • Elbow dysplasia

  • Heart problems

The Azerbaijani Shepherd Dog is intelligent, but also independent and sometimes stubborn. Early socialization and consistent training are crucial to make them obedient and confident. This breed requires an experienced owner who is firm and decisive.
