Other names

The American Rat Terrier is most commonly known by this name, but there are some alternative names or variations used in different contexts or regions:

  1. Rat Terrier – This is the most commonly used and simple name for the breed.
  2. Rattie – An informal, cute nickname often used by enthusiasts.
  3. Feist Terrier – In some parts of the US, small, energetic terriers, including the Rat Terrier, are referred to as "Feists."

History of the breed

The American Rat Terrier originated in the United States and was originally bred as a versatile farm dog and ratter. This breed is a cross between several terrier types, including the Fox Terrier and Manchester Terrier, with possible contributions from sighthounds for added speed and agility. Around the 19th and 20th centuries, Rat Terriers were indispensable on farms because of their effectiveness in controlling vermin.

Character and temperament

The American Rat Terrier is a cheerful, energetic, and intelligent dog. It is strongly focused on its family and is known for its loyalty and playful nature. Although a typical terrier with a strong prey drive, it is also remarkably affectionate and good with children. This breed gets along well with other pets, provided it is socialized early.

Physical characteristics

Rat Terriers are small to medium sized dogs with a lean but muscular build.

  • Shoulder height : 25-45 cm
  • Weight : 4-11 kg
  • Coat : Short, smooth and easy to maintain, with a variety of colors including white, black, brown, and tan.
For collars and harnesses: average neck size of 25-35 cm and chest circumference of 40-55 cm.

Care

This breed requires minimal grooming. A weekly brushing is sufficient to remove loose hair. Due to its active nature, the coat often stays clean. Check the ears regularly, trim the nails as needed, and keep the teeth clean.

Movement and activity

The Rat Terrier needs plenty of exercise to burn off energy. Daily walks, playtime, and mental stimulation, such as puzzles or retrieving, are essential. They excel in dog sports like agility and flyball.

Health

Rat Terriers are generally healthy dogs with a life expectancy of 12-18 years. Possible health problems include:

  • Patellar luxation
  • Hip dysplasia
  • Eye problems, such as progressive retinal atrophy (PRA)

Power supply

A high-quality dog food tailored to their weight and activity level is ideal. On average, they need 120-200 grams of food per day, divided into two meals. Make sure the food contains sufficient protein to support their active lifestyle.

Training and socialization

Rat Terriers are intelligent and respond well to positive training techniques. They are sensitive to your tone of voice, so use a gentle but consistent approach. Early socialization is important to prevent them from becoming overly alert or reserved.

Suitability for owners

This breed is ideal for active owners who enjoy spending time with their dog. Rat Terriers thrive in a family setting and can adapt to apartment life, provided they get enough exercise.
