History

The American English Coonhound originates in the United States and descends from English Foxhounds imported in the 17th and 18th centuries. This breed was developed for hunting raccoons and other game, and is known for its stamina and excellent scenting ability. They are particularly popular in the Southern US, where they are traditionally used for night hunting.

Character and Temperament

The American English Coonhound is energetic, friendly, and intelligent. They are affectionate with their family and social with other dogs, but can be reserved with strangers. This breed has a strong hunting instinct and requires an experienced owner who can manage their energy and instincts.

  • Shoulder height: 53-69 cm

  • Weight: 20-30 kg

  • Coat: Short, dense and shiny

Care

The American English Coonhound's coat is easy to maintain. Weekly brushing helps remove loose hair and keeps the coat healthy. Regularly check their ears, as their long, floppy ears can be susceptible to infections. Also ensure good dental hygiene and trim their nails as needed.

Movement and Activity

This breed has a high energy level and requires daily exercise. Long walks, runs, and scent detection activities are ideal for stimulating them physically and mentally. Due to their hunting background, a secure fenced area is essential to allow them to run freely.

Health

The American English Coonhound is generally healthy, but may be susceptible to:

  • Hip dysplasia

  • Ear infections

  • Obesity (due to insufficient exercise)

American English Coonhound Life Expectancy

With proper care and nutrition, they can reach an age of 11-12 years.

Nutrition

A balanced diet with high-quality protein is essential to support their energy levels. An adult American English Coonhound needs an average of 400-600 grams of dog food per day, depending on their weight and activity level. Always provide fresh water.

Training and Socialization

The American English Coonhound is intelligent but can be stubborn. Positive reinforcement and early socialization are crucial to developing a well-adjusted and obedient pet. They require a patient and consistent owner.

Suitability for Owners

This breed is suitable for active owners who spend a lot of time outdoors and have experience with hunting dogs. They are less suitable for city dwellers or people with a sedentary lifestyle. A spacious, fenced garden is ideal.
