A lick stone contains salt and, depending on the type, added minerals; a lick bucket such as Horslyx is licked out slowly by your horse and keeps him occupied. Salt lick, mineral lick or lick bucket?
- Himalayan: pure, untreated salt and very hard, so your horse cannot easily bite pieces off. The Salt Lick Himalaya comes in sizes from 1 kilo to 10 kilo; the 2-3 and 3-4 kilo versions have a rope for hanging.
- Naturel or Mineral: the Salt Lick Naturel is plain salt, the Salt Lick Mineral also contains added minerals and trace elements. Both in 3 x 2 kilo or 10 kilo.
- Horslyx: a lick bucket that your horse licks out slowly. Besides Original there are the variants Mint, Garlic, Mobility, Respiratory and Digestion; the composition is on the label. The 650-gram Minis are fed by hand, in the trailer or when the farrier comes; there is also a Selection Box with six flavours.
The right lick stone holder
A holder protects the stone from rain and dirt. For the field there is the vPlast post-mounted lick stone holder for a 10-kilo stone. In the stable, the Robu holder for 10 kilo or the smaller holders for a 2-kilo stone work well, such as the slide-in lick stone holder or the Inleg Dura.
Points to note
Make sure there is always fresh water nearby. Horslyx contains sugar; the amount is stated on the label. Take this into account for a horse on a diet, and for health questions consult your vet. If your horse already gets a mineral mix, compare the composition before you also give a mineral lick.

Does a horse need a lick stone if he gets hard feed?
With a lick stone, your horse can take extra salt himself. Check the label of your hard feed to see how much salt it already contains, and if in doubt follow the advice of your feed supplier or vet.
How long does a 5-kilo Horslyx last a horse?
That varies per horse: one licks calmly, another tries to bite. Keep an eye on use in the first weeks and take the bucket away in between if needed.
Can I also use a horse lick stone for sheep or cows?
According to the packaging, the 10-kilo Salt Lick Himalaya is intended for cattle, horses and sheep. For other stones, check the label to see which animals they are intended for.
