Fly traps without power come in two types: traps that catch with a sticky layer and traps that lure flies inside with a scent. Both are in this collection, from a single sticky roll for the kitchen to fly ribbon systems of hundreds of metres for a large stable. Brands include Knock Pest, Resoluut, Zapi and Sticky Trap.
Sticky or bait?
Sticky traps are odourless and therefore suitable for indoors. You hang the yellow Knock Pest sticky rolls (5 and 7 metres) in the stable or shed; you stick a window trap onto the glass, where flies crawl towards the light. For a large stable there is fly ribbon on a roll: a complete set with 400 metres of ribbon and replacement rolls of 400 or 700 metres. The ribbon runs along the ceiling, and when it is full you wind on a clean section.
Bait traps, such as the FlyNip traps and the fly bucket, catch large numbers of flies outdoors. They smell strongly and therefore belong at a distance from house, stable and patio. For replacement there is separate bait (attractant) and a refill.
Where do you hang the trap?
- Hang sticky strips where flies rest or are drawn to: by windows, lights and near manure, but not above a walkway at head height.
- Hang a bait trap in the sun and in the direction where the wind blows the smell away from your house.
- Replace a sticky strip when it is full or dusty; a dirty strip catches far less.
For fruit flies in the kitchen there is a separate fruit fly trap.
Good to know
In spaces where you see little and where flies keep coming all day, such as a canteen or milk room, a UV lamp is often handier; you will find these in electric fly killers. All traps, products and protection against horseflies, wasps and mosquitoes are in flying insects. For the stable specifically, you can also look at fly traps for the stable.
Frequently asked questions
How long does a fly strip last?
Until it is full or dusty. In a busy stable that can happen quickly; then replace it sooner.
Does a FlyNip trap smell?
Yes, the bait smells strongly. That is why you hang it outside, a few metres away from doors and windows.
Is fly ribbon suitable for a small stable?
The ribbon system is mainly handy in large spaces. For a small stable or horse box, a sticky roll is often enough.
